“There is the complete utter loss of faith in GOP politics,” argued Jim Jordan, a Democratic strategist. “This is chickens coming home to roost in a way that was almost unimaginable a year ago.”I don't think that what's going on is anything as intellectual as an evaluation and rejection of GOP politics. I just think it means that most swing voters right now are more afraid of starving than they are of a terrorist attack.
When people want the government to protect them from terrorists, they're just asking the government to do its proper job. When they ask for meals and houses, they're just statists. But I don't think people are thinking in philosophical terms such as these.
A lot of people are just primarily motivated by fear. When they're afraid of violence, they're Red State Republicans. When they think they're about to starve, they're True Blue.
